Single Futon Furniture: Why Bother?

A single futon can be anything from one long cushion that trifolds to form a chair shape and sits on the floor, to a chair with an actual frame and a futon mattress that folds into seating and lowers flat for sleeping. It’s easy to confuse a single futon chair with a standard futon chair, but there is a difference. A futon chair might not hold out long enough for an adult to sleep comfortably, at least not without an ottoman designed to go with the chair that can be pushed against it to add length. But a single futon that’s designed to sleep one comfortably is essentially a chair. It appears to be an oversize chair compared to a standard futon chair.

The foam futons that fold into a chair shape and sit on the floor are ideal for places like kids’ rooms and to keep stored in case you need an extra cushion for the night. This type of chair is can usually be purchased anywhere from $15-$25. Because they’re just foam covered in thin fabric, these won’t last long nearly as long with regular use as a standard single futon.

All of these are different from futon sofa beds which are typically double or full-sized mattresses that can be used during the day as seating and folded out to be used as beds that are large enough to sleep two people at night.

A single futon is perfect if you have a futon sofa and you want the furniture to match. It also provides one extra place for someone to sit and sleep. You can find them with armrests on the sides like ordinary chairs or in a more casual style with no armrests. An ottoman in matching fabric, especially when it’s designed to go with that specific futon, can make a sleeping adult feel much less confined and more comfortable as well as add an extra place to sit, and an extra touch of color and pattern to the room.
